Man in Nature

There’s a generosity to the film’s structure, allowing its large ensemble to breathe and overlap, much like the hum of the sewing machines that fill the workshop. Ozpetek leans into memory and imagination, blurring the line between performance and lived experience, while celebrating the often unseen artistry behind cinema. The result is warm, layered and deeply affectionate — a film that honours both the craft and the community that bring stories to life, stitched together with elegance and heart.

Film Notes

A vibrant, heartfelt celebration of women, craft and the magic behind the screen.

Ferzan Ozpetek, known for his richly textured ensemble dramas, turns his attention to the world of costume and performance with Diamonds, drawing on his own experiences of film and theatre tailoring in 1980s Italy. The film opens in the present, with Ozpetek himself gathering a group of actresses for a new project, before slipping — almost seamlessly — into a reimagined past. In 1970s Rome, a bustling atelier run by two sisters becomes the centre of a story shaped by creativity, collaboration and the quiet intensity of making something beautiful under pressure.
