Primavera draws on Tiziano Scarpa’s acclaimed novel Stabat Mater to reimagine Vivaldi’s early years at Venice’s Ospedale della Pietà through the eyes of Cecilia, a virtuoso violinist raised as an orphan. Inside this cloistered world, the girls’ orchestra is renowned, yet its players perform hidden from view, heard but never truly recognised. Vivaldi’s arrival as their new maestro introduces a disruptive “spring” into Cecilia’s life, as lessons and rehearsals open windows onto the wider city, ambition and the possibility of refusing the marriage arranged for her.
