FILM NOTES

A sharp, very funny adults-only dinner-party comedy where the wine flows, inhibitions vanish and no one leaves quite the same.

The Invite is Olivia Wilde’s playful, barbed remake of Spanish relationship comedy The People Upstairs, re-staged as a single-night chamber piece in San Francisco. Joe and Angela’s marriage is fraying, their daughter edging towards independence and their lives stuck in a rut of petty arguments and unspoken resentments. Enter Hawk and Piña, the impossibly confident, sexually liberated couple from upstairs whose late-night noise has already become a source of fascination and irritation.

Man in Nature

Over one boozy dinner the four circle each other, trading jokes, provocations and confessions as the evening gradually nudges from awkward small talk into therapy session, seduction attempt and emotional demolition derby. Wilde leans on crackling dialogue, strong performances and escalating discomfort rather than broad farce, exploring jealousy, desire, compromise and the stories couples tell themselves to stay together. It’s an ideal choice for audiences who enjoy smart, talky comedies about modern relationships, with just enough outrageous behaviour to keep everyone blushing and laughing.
