Fatherland sees Academy Award winner Paweł Pawlikowski return to post-war Europe in stark black and white, this time following Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika on a road trip from US-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. Set at the height of the Cold War, the film traces Mann’s first visit home after years of exile, as he collects high honours while navigating accusations of cowardice, simmering ideological tensions and grief that has seeped deep into the family’s foundations. With cinematography by Łukasz Żal, it completes a loose trilogy with Ida and Cold War, again distilling politics and history into intimate, human encounters.
Sandra Hüller’s precise, watchful Erika and Hanns Zischler’s weary, proud Mann give the film its emotional spine, their conversations unfolding amid bombed-out landscapes, formal ceremonies and uneasy social gatherings. Fatherland offers audiences a compact but richly layered experience: a road movie, a family drama and a meditation on guilt and conviction in a world choosing sides.
