FILM NOTES
A beautifully restrained, nature-soaked study of love, loss and the strange companionship between a grieving woman and a wild hawk.
Adapted from Helen Macdonald’s acclaimed memoir, H is for Hawk follows Helen, a history-of-science scholar whose life is shattered by the sudden death of her father, a photojournalist who first taught her to see the world through birds and lenses. Seeking something as far from human consolation as possible, she buys a young goshawk she names Mabel, fills her freezer with hawk food, turns off her phone and begins the arduous work of training one of falconry’s most notoriously difficult birds.

Philippa Lowthorpe’s film balances intimate character drama with the raw presence of landscape and wildlife, letting Claire Foy’s quietly intense performance carry us through isolation, obsession and the slow thawing that follows. Woodland flights, kitchen perches and strained family visits become stages on which Helen tests how much of herself she can surrender to wildness before she must reclaim her own life. For audiences, this is a patient, emotionally rich experience—less about neat redemption than about the messy, tentative ways grief, nature and love might finally begin to coexist.
