FILM NOTES
A luminous, tender-hearted story of love, loyalty, and what it means to be human.
Based on the bestselling 2021 novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro, Klara and the Sun is adapted for the screen by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi and Dahvi Waller. Shot in Waititi's native Aotearoa New Zealand, the film transposes Ishiguro's intimate, speculative fiction into a visually striking future where Artificial Friends are sold as companions for lonely children. Jenna Ortega brings gentle curiosity and quiet dignity to Klara, a discontinued B1 model whose innocent wonder at the world—her reverence for the sun, her belief in kindness—gives the story its emotional core.
This is a film of quiet beauty and profound feeling, inviting audiences to reflect on connection, mortality, and the boundaries of love. Amy Adams brings warmth and complexity to Josie's mother, while Mia Tharia's portrayal of the ailing Josie anchors the story in real, aching humanity. With its sun-drenched wheat fields, tender performances, and a score by Michael Giacchino, Klara and the Sun is a moving, hopeful meditation on what it means to care for someone completely—perfect for viewers seeking thoughtful, emotionally rich science fiction.
