FILM NOTES
A single, carefully curated evening of big mountains, bold ideas and unforgettable tales from the edge of the world.
Founded as a celebration of mountain culture, the NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival has grown into a flagship South Island event, drawing stories of climbing, skiing, biking, wilderness travel and expedition life from around the globe. The full 2026 festival marked the 24th edition, with 63 films selected from 266 international entries, including 17 world premieres and 18 NZ‑made works, plus a strong line‑up of authors and guest speakers, presented live in Wānaka, Queenstown and online across New Zealand and Australia. Run by the NZ Mountain Film Festival Charitable Trust, it also supports community projects via a grant scheme funded by donations, a silent auction that raised $7,815, and proceeds from the National Tour that takes festival highlights to communities like Waiheke.

For Waiheke audiences, the 30 August screening offers a distilled, best‑of selection from the wider programme: films that capture high‑adrenaline mountain epics, intimate human journeys and environmental storytelling, chosen to work as a single, satisfying evening. It is an easy way to experience the spirit of the Wānaka and Queenstown festival without leaving the island, while still connecting to its broader ethos of adventure, creativity and stewardship, ideal for anyone who loves peaks, paths and the people who explore them.
