FILM NOTES
A gripping, Oscar-winning exposé that changed the conversation around dolphins forever.
Directed by former National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos, The Cove is a landmark documentary that blends investigative journalism with the tension of an eco-thriller. The film follows Ric O'Barry, who in the 1960s trained the five dolphins who shared the role of Flipper in the hit television series—a career that later fuelled his lifelong mission of activism and redemption. Employing hidden cameras, underwater microphones, and covert reconnaissance, O'Barry and Psihoyos's team infiltrate the heavily guarded cove in Taiji, Wakayama, to document the annual dolphin drive hunt that has long remained hidden from public view.
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2010 Oscars, The Cove is both a call to action and a deeply moving story of one man's reckoning with his past. The film's covert-operation structure gives it the pulse of a thriller, while its stunning underwater cinematography and haunting score lend it an unexpected beauty. More than a decade on, its questions about animal welfare, mercury contamination, and the ethics of keeping cetaceans in captivity remain as urgent as ever. Essential viewing for anyone who cares about the ocean, wildlife, and the power of documentary filmmaking to effect real change.
