FILM NOTES
A warm, wildly funny bush‑escape adventure that finds real heart in the oddball bond between a “bad egg” and his gruff uncle.
Based on Barry Crump’s novel Wild Pork and Watercress, Hunt for the Wilderpeople takes the bones of a classic Kiwi bush yarn and gives it Taika Waititi’s distinctive blend of deadpan humour and emotional honesty. Raised on hip-hop, foster care and fantasies of gangster life, Ricky arrives at Bella and Hec’s off-grid farm ready to run away at the first sign of affection. Instead, he’s gradually claimed by Bella’s fierce kindness, Hec’s wary competence and the surrounding forest, until a sudden loss pushes him to stage his own escape and accidentally drag Hec into outlaw territory.

For audiences, the film is a genuine crowd-pleaser: equal parts chase movie, odd-couple comedy and coming-of-age story, threaded with sharp jokes, quotable one-liners and sweeping views of the New Zealand bush. As Ricky and Hec hike, bicker and slowly learn to see each other as whānau, the story touches on belonging, masculinity and care without ever feeling heavy-handed. It’s an ideal choice for families and friends looking for something funny, heartfelt and distinctly Aotearoa, with performances and scenery that make the wilderness feel both mythic and deeply human.
