FILM NOTES
A moody, wind-battered “chilling romance” where the wild West Coast landscape mirrors the dangerous pull between fear, desire and the unknown.
Shot on the rugged West Coast of the South Island, Perfect Strangers takes the familiar premise of a one-night stand gone wrong and twists it into something stranger and more hypnotic. Melanie, stuck in a dead-end job and tired of small-town routines, thinks she’s finally met someone different when a nameless stranger buys her a drink and offers a little adventure. By the time she realises his “castle” is a shack on a deserted island and the boat has already left shore, she’s far beyond the point of easy retreat.

Rather than playing as a straightforward stalker thriller, the film leans into shifting power dynamics, uneasy attraction and the gothic charge of isolation. Long takes of rain, surf and creaking floorboards sit alongside bursts of dark humour and genuine tenderness, keeping viewers off balance as Melanie decides whether this is captivity, rescue or something in between. It’s a distinctive, atmospheric Kiwi psychodrama for audiences who like their romance twisted, their suspense slow-burning and their coastal scenery as menacing as it is beautiful.
