FILM NOTES

Across generations, women’s voices open a conversation about the freedom to live on their own terms.

At fifty, Argentine filmmaker Liliana María Sánchez returned to her youthful ambition of making cinema. Her first interviews brought together four generations of one family: a great-grandmother, her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter. From that intimate beginning, the project grew into a conversation with twenty Spanish-speaking women, tracing the permissions and prohibitions that shaped their lives. Personal testimony meets archival material, animation and original music.

When Did We Stop Asking For Permission?

There is warmth in this gathering of voices, and pleasure in discovering the connections between lives separated by age and geography. Memories of childhood sit alongside reflections on work, relationships and motherhood, inviting audiences to recognise familiar experiences and imagine the freedoms still to come.
