Adapted from Rasmus Lindgren’s 2020 novel De Oönskade, Bad Apples places an outrageous moral predicament inside an overstretched British primary school. Swedish director Jonatan Etzler, whose award-winning short Get Ready with Me also explored classroom tensions, brings a distinctly Scandinavian streak of discomfort and dark humour to this Toronto International Film Festival selection.
Saoirse Ronan embraces one of her boldest roles as Maria, a well-meaning teacher whose desperate choice produces unexpectedly positive results. Eddie Waller proves a formidable young counterpart, while Jacob Anderson and Rakie Ayola enrich the school community surrounding them. Provocative, tightly wound and increasingly preposterous, the film invites audiences to laugh, squirm and question how easily principles can bend when everyone benefits.
