FILM NOTES
Old-world glamour conceals a chilling struggle for dignity, freedom and control.
My Duchess explores the troubled final years of Wallis Simpson, the American socialite whose relationship with King Edward VIII precipitated his abdication. After Edward’s death in 1972, Wallis remains at their Paris château with her confidant Jean-Claude and devoted butler Louis. Her increasing dependence upon formidable lawyer Suzanne Blum, however, draws her into an unsettling struggle for autonomy.

Joan Collins brings vulnerability, wit and defiance to the ageing Duchess, opposite Isabella Rossellini’s poised and calculating Blum. Director Mike Newell frames their relationship with gothic tension, revealing the isolation behind a life once defined by notoriety and glamour. Elegant yet unsettling, this intimate drama examines ageing, coercion and the enduring desire to retain one’s dignity.
