Set during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, The Uprising follows an unnamed ploughman whose grief becomes political fury. With radical priest John Ball and veteran Wat Tyler, he gathers labourers and farmers driven beyond endurance by serfdom, punitive taxation and the upheaval following the Black Death. Their march towards London places them against the authority of the young Richard II.
Paul Greengrass brings his urgent, immersive filmmaking to this turbulent chapter of English history, surrounding Andrew Garfield with a formidable ensemble. Mud, fear and collective anger give the rebellion an immediate physical force, while its intimate human story keeps the spectacle grounded.
